Tanko is right. What I want is for the avi (or are they mpeg4? I haven't looked) to be converted to a format that a regular dvd player can read and play... I guess that's VOB. Then obviously I want the dvd-player-playable files burned on DVD.
I can find all this info myself Jas. I was just hoping to save my precious time by having you do it. It just requires a conversion program (avi or mpeg to VOB), and a DVD burner.
This is what i guess i want. This is directly from shelley emailing me.

.avi files can use all kinds of different compression types, its just a common file name extension. Without examining the contents of the file either manually or using an application you can't tell what type it is.

this is a tough problem .
if i had the files i could prolly make it work but since i have no experience with it myself i can't give you a howto and / or proggie
i googled it and checked some proggies but many tools are shareware and cost money to get a decent result .
however this forum offers alot of answers but i guess you ll have to do the research yourself .
LInk
good luck , i ll keep on it and get back to you after i did some tests myself
PS :
if you want to check what compression was used and what codec you need download Gspot .

I would try Nero first, I presume you can read/view the avi file on your PC.
DVD players all use mpeg2 compression in the .vob format, some DVD players support other formats like VCD & DivX as well.

dvd shrink can work very well as well as clone dvd to copy dvds as well as rip them...
as for a converter i got mine (total video converter) from a nifty site that begins with bit lol....
if you want it pm me with an email and i can send it to you since its a pretty small file....

i suppose, even if you don't know exactly what type of format the avi is at, it wouldn't really narrow down what kind of app to use as I assume you prolly has your avi at some common compression format and those conversion prog usually supports many formats.
and i don't think he's trying to rip a dvd but trying to convert a movie file to dvd format.
but.. i dont know what kind of app is best at free price.
but you could have this as a starter
http://www.videohelp.com/
had me helped couple times in the past, and they got quite a number of tutorials and app list.
and maybe google for ["avi to dvd" convert] will help u too.

I actually did this today i.e. convert an avi on my PC to a DVD using Nero Vision 4 (part of the Nero suite of apps for CD/DVD writing).
