I was wonderin what you all use to listen to music whilst gaming. Lookin for a program that can run quietly in the background n not use too much of my resources :-D Cheers in advance!
amarok - http://amarok.kde.org - it's the best music player of the universe.
it's still only available for linux, but amarok 2 will be shipped for windows and mac, too.
coolest features:
- simple interface
- you can browse your music by playlists AND by genre/artist (and other mp3-tags) AND by path/filename.
- heads up display, when new song starts
- automatic detection of cover-images
- wikipedia/lyrics support for current song/artist from within the player
- built in last.fm-support
- automatic (points 0-100) and manual (stars 0-5) rating system for songs
- ...
winamp or foobar2000 should do imo... i still like winamp for its plenty of skin choices (aerotune looks cool which i use). just as a reference, winamp uses 7.5mb of ram and uses about 2-5% cpu while playing on my comp when wmp uses about 20mb of mem.
but be warned! though, lol, from my experience, playing music at loud volume while playing hw2... u will miss hearing 'cols are under attack' warning, and you end up finding out a dd emptying ur patch just coz ur music was loud...
---=== WARN : linux (mac) geek talk below ===---
man, amarok... those kde boys love bloats...
rhythmbox rocks... simple, but functional for what it needs to do.
talking about lightweight, bmp, bmpx, audacious are the choices
or muine is very lightweight with decent interface and pulls album art just fine and dandy automatically too.
(and for the record, why does linux have about 10 decent working audio players??? that does one way or the other similar stuff...)
basically wmp, itunes and those proprietry stuff includes like 10 times more useless feature than what i want (which is just play the damn and keep it simple, small and fast and easy to nagivate through many songs that includes playback to FLAC <- very important)
but itunes just includes the itunes music store, which is quite handy to check out latest songs with preview function, or just drop a few bucks to get the song. (but once again, those priprietry kids love proprietry formats and is not par with cd quality flac files, so, i only use for previewing purpose and i get the proper cd later on and rip for better quality and drop the damn fair use right or whatever drm kinda stupidity)
mac has cog, which is a very simple player that can play many audio formats.
wmp... sux, period. too bloated, no improvement since version 6 and no reason to use over winamp, which can even do video playback... so wmp cant even win to play porns
absolutely no ressources token for a crappy UI or something else, just a codec a open statement and a play button . All codecs you can imagine are available for it.
imo, for music, mpc isnt best, it can be good for movies, since it can also do quicktime and real too, but then again there's also vlc, but things look bloated going this way.
mpc is cool if u know to use it right. check in the options for all sorts of options. oh and mp2 is the lowest taking resources player i've found so far the next one up is mpc. winamp takes some resources too. give them a try.
